Piano lessons– my teaching experience

'Piano playing can be a door to yourself. And it is an ongoing process...'

I have been teaching piano for more than 6 years and have offered piano lessons to kids and adults, from the age of 4 to 70. I am happy to teach all level of students, from beginners to advanced. I have plenty of experience to prepare my students for exams and performances.

I adopted a holistic approaching of piano teaching (coaching) by integrating what I gained from approaches and styles of my teachers to create a unique blend and offer a tailor-made lesson to each of my students. I helped my students developed their playing to a next level by tackling problems like performance anxiety, hand injuries, playing styles etc. They gained merit results in ABRSM exams and participated in public music events.

I work with a range of approaches in my piano teaching which is not necessarily start from 'note learning' but a more observant approach. As a piano teacher, I need to figure out my students' learning patterns and see which way of learning works best for them. For instance, if my student is too dependent on auditory sense, he/ she might have difficulties in feeling the how he/ she play, and recognising the note. We would need to go through a few different 'workshops' or exercises in the piano lessons by opening the door of his kinaesthetic and visual senses. From there we might discover more...

Piano playing is essentially about listening to what sound we make and feeling how we play. Our auditory sense leads our kinaesthetic sense. This is what happen when we perform and practise. Therefore, visual sense is the least important which would bring us in the narrow focuses and potentially causes performance anxiety or overthinking in our playing. So it is not about note learning but shape and pattern recognition as we don't need to spell every single words when we speak. Piano lessons and learning can be really flexible!
