London Piano lessons
'It is all about providing guidance, tools, techniques, and strategies so that students can find their ways to work towards their goals.'
My piano teaching (coaching) concept is to explore possibilities with the student - not just passing on anything or pushing my ideas! It is a platform of equality and is the reason I prefer coaching. My aim is to give guidance and what students need by asking the important question ‘HOW?’. I want to teach people to play naturally and explore the musical nuances (not anything advanced! I infused it even in my beginner level teaching). It is not about mechanical learning. It is essentially about learning how to practice, how to feel, and how to listen!
An important lesson I learned as a musician is be kind to yourself. So often, musicians are too critical of themselves, which is an awfully painful and self-destructive process. This is what we are after— learn, understand, build, and grow. I always tell my students, ‘notice what happened, move on, and don’t fuss around’, we need to give a break to what we have learned or achieved.
In order to learn, understand, build and grow one must be in that present moment. Being critical creates a narrow focus, which is often accompanied by stress. Of course, when learning, a certain level of narrow focus is necessary, because we need to gain information. So, it is essential to stay in the presence, practising whilst seeing whole pictures employing a huge amount of close listening and imagination. It is rather meditative and calm. Thus, the state of mind is important to determine how practice will be.
A present mind can also help musicians bring out their best more often. Any tension cuts off one’s connection to the piano, while a present mind should be involved to loosen and oil up all the joints. The body then will be reconnected, like a circuit. One can then start to work on the music embodiment process whilst seeing them in the practice section as a whole… unleashing creativity!
Let composers speak through you:
‘The approach to music is like entering into relation with another living individual, and research suggests that understanding music is perceived as similar to knowing a person; we freely attribute human qualities to music, including age, sex, personality characteristics and feelings.’ (Ian McGilchrist, The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World)
Each person has a different capacity, personality, values, and history which may resonate differently to a composer’s intentions. Practising is knowing the composer as well as knowing your body; performing is letting the composer speak out on stage. A pianist and piano should be as one. Our body and soul are connected to the piano as a voice for the composer. This will only happen when the music is fully embodied and one playing in the presence. Therefore, we should practise in the presence mind; practise performing.
Reviews
Stephen has really helped me improve my playing. We’ve worked through a range of pieces by thinking about them both technically and creatively. Stephen has an excellent ear for where something is missing and has really helped me to think about the music in a more natural and open way. As a result my playing has not only improved but become more enjoyable.

'My 9 year old daughter has been taking lessons from Stephen for the past 5 months and has already shown great progress.
Stephen looks at the whole student, and adjusts his lessons to the individual so that my daughter, who has some special needs can work at her own pace and develop the skills she needs to enjoy piano. I was immediately impressed with Stephen's teaching methods and the patience he shows towards my daughter. Stephen has the ability to see and develop the personal styles of his students and choses materials based upon the individual. He has an incredible knowledge of music and composition and is also just a very nice person. We look forward to continuing our daughters lessons and watch her progress with Stephen's guidance.'
